Welcome to 6th Grade English Language Arts. I am looking forward to getting to know each of you. I have taught in North Carolina for 20 years. I graduated from Lynchburg College with a degree in special education and psychology. I then went on to earn my masters degree from ECU in reading education. I love to read and share my love of literature with my students.
Entering middle school is a big transition, and I hope to help all of you grow and further develop into independent and responsible people. As we journey through the year, I will do my best to equip all students with the tools needed to be successful inside and outside of the classroom. To ensure success in my class remember to always come prepared with your materials and homework. Please take care to be respectful of peers and teachers. I value honesty and open communication. Remember ask questions when needed!
During this school year we will build upon the information you have learned in your elementary years. Some of the topics may seem familiar from your elementary years but we look at these topics in more depth. A few of the main topics we will be focusing on this year include: comprehension of fiction and nonfiction/informational texts, literary texts and elements, vocabulary acquisition, grammar and usage, and different forms of writing.
The best way to contact me is through email: [email protected]. or by phone. Wish List Our classroom would greatly appreciate any of the following items to help us get through the school year. Grading Policy The grading system will be made up of total points, with each category counting a certain number of times. Homework and assignments will be accepted up to one week late with a deduction of 10 points each day it is late. After one week, the assignment may be turned in, but it will only be eligible for half credit or less depending on the quality of work. Any assignments not turned in will result in a 0. There will be no extra credit assignments; however, students may earn extra credit points during classroom activities and review games. Classwork- 100 points x 1 Quizzes- 100 points x 2 Tests/Projects- 100 points x 3
Absences If a student is absent, the assignment will not be counted late the day of the absence, but must be turned in upon returning to school. Assignment due dates for a prolonged absence due to illness will be at the teacher’s discretion. Students are responsible for obtaining the work they missed during an absence. There are designated folders in the back of the classroom where students should check for work that they may have missed due to an absence. All assignments and class notes will be posted on my website for student and parent convenience as well. I keep a weekly schedule posted on the website so parents and students can stay up to date on what is going on in the event of an absence. Students will not be exempt from any quiz or test due to absence without written documentation from a parent or guardian providing the reason why the student should be quizzed/tested on different day. The decision will still be at the teacher’s discretion due to the fact that assignments and assessments are scheduled at least a week in advance.
